In a collaboration that began last summer at the prestigious Public Theater, Bumble and bumble has moved to Broadway with the critically-acclaimed revival of the musical Hair. The majority of the actors on Broadway don wigs, but not so with this play, which shocked audiences when it debuted in 1967 for the actors’ rebelliously long, unruly locks and afros (and the full frontal nudity, naughty language and endless talk of free love). Bb. is the Official Haircare Partner of this production of the iconic musical, and as such, worked to ensure that every member of the cast wore their hippie hairstyles convincingly. When the production’s Costume Designer Michael McDonald suggested that one of his actors be given a perm, the stylists at Bb. determined that a good cut was all he needed to bring out the curl. Eventually, the majority of the cast was sent to Bb. – each receiving a style-enhancing cut (and possibly color), plus an individual prescription of Bb. products appropriate to their character’s look. Backstage favorites such as Grooming Creme and Surf Spray were particular appropriate, giving hair the ideal texture. “The thing that people have to remember about Hair (and the sixties) is that the kids grew their hair out as a form of protest, to make a statement,” says McDonald. Grow your hair out and help save the world? Hey, whatever works. Congratulations to the cast and crew of HAIR on their Drama Desk Award win for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and for 8 Tony Award Nominations, including Michael McDonald for Best Costume Design of a Musical.
