As many designers trended toward the traditional this season, Bumble and bumble stylists took risks; tossing out staid styles in favor of wholly original takes on the classics. From ponies to pomps, braids to buns – no hairstyle was spared an overhaul for fall. Bumble and bumble’s editorial stylists spent 4 weeks in 4 cities, worked on 64 shows, sprayed a hell of a lot of hairspray and racked up too many frequent flyer miles to count, but the looks that emerged were worth it. The New Pony, Modern Big Hair, The Updated Updo, and the Power Pompadour are trends not only worth noting, but also worth wearing.
Bb.Editorial stylist Laurent Philippon created looks for Reem Acra, BCBG, Chado Ralph Rucci and 8 others, while Rolando Beauchamp crafted the styles for designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Nicole Miller and Trovata. Jimmy Paul led the hair trends for Vera Wang, The Red Dress Project, Emanuel Ungaro and six others.
THE TRENDS The New Pony, shown at BCBG, Hervé Léger, Preen and Veronique Branquinho, ranged from sleek, straight and super low, to textured, high and tightly wrapped. At every show where The New Pony was predominant, Prep, Styling Lotion, Defrizz and Does It All were generously on hand.
Modern Big Hair stole the show at Erin Fetherston, Ohne Titel, Lacoste, VPL and Vivienne Westwood. Some models were textured and teased, others were left soft and flowing, and some had a duel-effect: slicked in front and mane-inspired in the back. No matter the look, when Modern Big Hair was created, Thickening Hairspray, Bb.Gel, Thickening Serum, Bb.Shine and Surf Spray were always part of the action.
The Updated Updo was caught up in the catwalk action, most notably at Emanuel Ungaro, Sportmax, Trovata, Vera Wang and Cynthia Steffe. These classic coifs with experimental execution incorporated buns, twists and braids in looks that were often smooth and tight, and other times loose and messy, and at one show (very memorably) appeared cyclone-inspired. Spray de Mode, Bb.Gel and Hair Powder made it all happen.
The Power Pompadour at Anne Valerie Hash, Chado Ralph Rucci, Guy Laroche and Nathan Jenden was the most theatrical style by far. Fifties and sixties-inspired pomps ranged from subtle and sublime to sky-high Bride of Frankenstein beehives. Styling Creme, Thickening Hairspray, Gellac and Classic Hairspray were responsible for the height (and holding it in place).
